THE GALACTICA REVIVAL: A CRITICAL ASSESSMENT By Andrew Fullen Richard Hatch is the best friend Battlestar Galactica fans have ever had. This is no understatement. What this man has done in the past five years to bring back Galactica is nothing short of inspirational. Richard Hatch is to Battlestar Galactica what Gene Roddenberry used to be to Star Trek. An uncompromising no nonsense force to be reckoned with whose mighty labors have yielded a glorious promotional trailer, two Galactica novels, and a merchandising campaign that is slowly gaining momentum. Richard Hatch is THE MAN in the eyes of Galactica fans everywhere. The Commanding Officer in charge of legions of Galactica fans whose rapport with them is akin to the rapport Gene Roddenberry used to have with the Science Fiction community when the original Star Trek was being broadcast back in 1966. As is the case with any endeavor in life, obstacles await even the best of us. A suppsed dueling production impemented by Glen Larson and Todd Moyer, seems to have been by design, to de-rail the efforts of Richard Hatch. Since there has not been one concrete shredof evidence to prove Larson and Moyer's claims, it would appear that Larson and Moyer's endeavors were either motivated by jealousy at seeing how successful Richard Hatch was being, or undisclosed political reasons. Perhaps the most severe obstacle thus far is Universal Studios continued immobility in moving forward with a commitment to Richard Hatch. Indeed, the Galactica revival has long since passed the Crossroads Phase of Universal giving some kind of commitment. The promotional trailer has been completed for some time now, Richard Hatch has his finances all lined up, and numerous corporations support Richard Hatch every step of the way. In light of all of this activity, Universal Studios is intensifying its reputation of being the bad guy in the eyes of Galactica fans as they continue to not move forward with some kind of approval to Richard Hatch. The rationale behind Universal Studios dormancy cannot be explained in logical terms as there is not one manifestation of logic to support Universals continued indecisiveness. The Syndication Market continues to support Sci-Fi programming extremely well, the fan base for Battlestar Galactica is strong enough to support a revival, production costs probably would'nt come out of Universal Studios pocket because Richard Hatch has raised his own mone, and fan response to a Galactica revival always reaches eppidemic proportions at every single convention that the Galactica trailer is shown at. In terms of evidence, Universal Studios would benefit in every conceivable way in reviving Battlestar Galactica. There is not one shred of negative evidence to support Universal Studios continued inactivity. If their inactivity is due to clarification of legal matters due to Glen Larson's and Todd Moyer's unwelcome intrusion, then I stand corrected. Of course, even if this were the case, how long would it honestly take Universal's Lawyers to resolve the matter? Probably not as long as it seems to be taking. Until Universal Studios proves the Richard Hatch revival, the most dangerous enemy of the Battlestar Galactica and the Colonial Fleet is not the Cylons, but the folks at 100 Universal City Plaza in California. |
