This morning I opened the paper and a series of circulars spilled onto my lap – bright, colored pages with bold fonts and frenetic language: “Now through Memorial Day only!” and “A Don’t Miss Memorial Day Sales Event!” As I took a deep breath and gathered up the pages that had spilled to the floor, at once it struck me: We owe more than commerce to those who sacrificed the balance of their lives for their country. It's time to take back Memorial Day. Memorial Day is meant to be a solemn occasion, a uniquely military holiday—the only one that honors fallen soldiers. But since the first one on May 30, 1868, a little after the Civil War (then known as “Decoration Day”) when flowers were placed on the graves of soldiers from both the North and the South, Memorial Day’s quiet reverence has slowly been lost to the noise of commerce and the American pursuit of recreation. This didn’t happen overnight; it snuck up on us. And it’s not necessarily the fault of the American people who time and again have proved themselves patriots. Even more surprising is that this disappointing trend hasn’t ebbed since the Long War began more than five years ago. Today the solemnity once associated with this day should be closer to the surface. Our nation is at war, which is to say our friends, family, and neighbors are fighting. Some of them do not make it home. In recent years, too many Americans have been personally touched by the sacrifice of battle. But the unfortunate reality is that for most people, the war remains a distant concept, something that happens on TV. Losing brave Americans on fields of strife is not a new phenomenon. It’s part of our heritage. For over two hundred and twenty five years, our troops have made the ultimate sacrifice for what they believed was worth more than their own lives: Freedom. Not just the notion of freedom or the sound bite called forth in politically expedient ways, but freedom practiced by Americans every day. This freedom is a gift across time, given most often anonymously. And now it is Memorial Day. How can Americans take it back and do right by the valor that created this day? By action. For starters, the National Moment of Remembrance resolution asks that at 3 PM local time on Memorial Day all Americans should “voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence.” Beyond that, Americans can honor the dead by supporting the living, especially those who serve. Send a note or visit the family of a servicemember who has died. Visit a veteran who is convalescing. Make a donation to the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, Armed Forces Relief Trust, or the Armed Services YMCA. Volunteer to work with local veterans’ groups. Encourage your employer to publicly recognize the veterans who work with you. Better yet, commit to hire veterans or military spouses in the coming year. Visit the graves of fallen soldiers. Leave a flower on the stone. Consider the grave and behold the cost of freedom. Or simply shake a Soldier’s hand. Support for the troops is more than a sticker on an SUV. Whatever we do, let’s make it personal, not commercial. Let us take back Memorial Day, not for abstract ideas or guilt for having forgotten, but to pay a debt. To remember—and to act on the memory—is the least we can do for the men and women who said, “I will die so strangers’ lives will be better.” Make Memorial Day a personal reflection of a stranger’s costly gift.

When you think of his name, writing may not come to mind; but never count out a Colonial when in doubt. Richard Hatch has quite a few bylines to his credit, including a collaboration with The Sarge on Ben Bella Books' So Say We All. He sat down with me at Farpoint in Hunt Valley, MD to talk a little bit about Richard Hatch, the writer...and then, the two of them just kicked back to rap about the stranger lessons life can teach you.

I think that Zaric has a lot of respect for Roslyn. He's gained a lot of respect, not respect as a person, but respect for Baltar's skill. I think he's come to recognize that Baltar's a lot smarter than he sometimes pretends to be. Sometimes he plays stupid. He plays naïve, but there's something far more aware going on. I find the Baltar character one of the more interesting characters on the show, for that same reason. What's motivating him? Sometimes our ego -- our need to be loved, our need to feel important -- drives us, but ultimately, on the way, we have an epiphany. We have a revelation. We're all capable of moving into a greater realization of who we are in the world, and finding a more positive way to do something.

My Dad (Joe McAdams) passed away this week. He had been fighting lung cancer for the last two years... and yes he got lung cancer from smoking. My only hope is that at least one person might read this and consider kicking the habit. If he could have gone back in time and quit smoking...he would have. Life doesn't work that way. There is a painful price to pay. Mike McAdams

THE SKINNY: Well, it looks like my cheerleading for everyone to watch BATTLESTAR GALACTICA on its new Sunday night slot was not a great success. The ratings took another slide downwards on its new night. The first of 10 episodes from the popular SCI FI Channel series’ third season debuted Jan. 21 to a 1.4 household rating/1.8 million viewers, according to an ABC Cable Networks Group analysis of Nielsen Media Research data. Those ratings were below the 1.9-rating/2.1 million viewers the show averaged during the second half of its second season from when it aired on Friday nights.
Scheduled to arrive in stores March, 2007, the New Battlestar Galactica Volume #1 Trade Paperback collects the five-issue opening story arc (issue #0 - #4) written by Greg (Incredible Hulk) Pak with art by Nigel Raynor. My newest soundtrack CD has finally come out, for Warner Bros.' film "Rest Stop," a small horror movie that was released on DVD last October. The score is one of my best: lyrical, melodic, quirky and creepy. Check out audio clips and a track-by-track review on my blog: The record has my complete score and three original songs, performed by Raya Yarbrough, Bt4 and the Rev. Buford "Buck" Davis and His Minstrel Singers. Edward James Olmos liked the first track, "All That Remains," so much that it will be appearing in next week's episode of "Battlestar Galactica," which he directed.
As fans of "Battlestar Galactica" wait anxiously for the series' third season to resume, Dynamite's "Battlestar Galactica" comic series not only fills the vacuum, but is so good it will likely last long after the TV show has gone the way of the Enterprise.
Set in the middle of the second season, writer Greg Pak successfully captures the sophistication of the show as well as its overall vibe and that of its numerous and unique characters. Whether it's Commander Adama's quiet strength, Starbuck's cockiness and cool, Number Six's sultry manipulations, Gaius Baltar's psychoses and desire for self-preservation or President Roslin's steel will, all these characters ring true.
By JEROME MAIDA For the Daily News I don't normally spotlight miniseries (or books that are two months late), but I have to bring your attention to the just-issued "Battlestar Galactica: Zarek" from Dynamite. The four-issue limited series focuses on Tom Zarek - the fan-favorite revolutionary played by original series actor Richard Hatch - and tells how he grew up with loving parents in the slave state that is his own Sagittaron colony and in the shadow of the First Cylon War. As we see in the first issue, everything from the government's repressive policies to devastating personal tragedies helped slowly meld this innocent child into a ruthless rebel. Whether or not you watch "Battlestar Galactica," you should enjoy this series. The writing of Brandon Jerwa and the stunning artwork by Adriano Batista combine to make "Zarek" a great read.
As some have noticed...we've had some problems here and there on the site...and perhaps some email glitches as well.. Should be all fixed..

Some know her as XENA: WARRIOR PRINCESS, but fans of Lucy Lawless have come to know her as the Cylon model D’Anna Biers on BATTLESTAR GALACTICA most recently. Enmeshed in a complex web of spirituality and divine right, the character of D’Anna has become intimately linked to Gaius Baltar [James Callis], Six [Tricia Helfer], and baby Hera this season. Knowing that Lawless is leaving the series at the mid-point this season, how can it all end? iF MAGAZINE intended to find out all of the answers to our questions when we spoke to Lawless recently.
THE SKINNY: You can never have enough things … This is apparently the philosophy of Universal Pictures and Strike Entertainment (previous collaborators on the DAWN OF THE DEAD remake, SLITHER and the upcoming CHILDREN OF MEN). The studio and the production company have announced that they’re embarking on a new version of John W. Campbell’s short story WHO GOES THERE?, better known to filmgoers as 1951’s THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, directed by Christian Nyby and produced by Howard Hawks. Director/producer John Carpenter’s 1982 edition, THE THING, with mind-blowing special effects by Rob Bottin, is probably best known to today’s viewers. It’s likely that the new THING will resemble the Carpenter interpretation, with an alien that can look like anyone or anything giving bloody grief to a crew of researchers in Antarctica. Ronald D. Moore (executive producer of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, also produced by NBC/Universal) is writing the screenplay.

They new wave of Battlestar Galactica ships from Hasbro in the Titanium Series. Once again, no commercials, advertisements, or anything. Once again mixed in with the Star Wars line shipments. Although I have to admit, it was a pleasant surprise to stumble onto these. Here we have Colonial One, Colonial Raptor, and another Mark VII? I like to think I am a die hard Battlestar fan, but either this is a packaging mistake, or I missed something on the televised series. The older model ship in the first wave has the exact same name and description, just a different picture on the back, and of course, the different fighter inside. I'm kinda partial to the white original version myself, but hey, to each they're own. Maybe BattlesatarGalactica.com can shed some light onto this, are they both Mark VIIs, or did Hasbro screw up? Anyway, last on the list is the bigger version of the Galactica, which runs about $20, compared to it's smaller counter part from wave 1, which is $4.95. I did find on the Hasbro web site that they are slated to release the Cylon Centurion soon, which will be a larger model at about $20 as well. No picture is available at this time however. No word on the Pegasus or Scar yet, hopefully soon. For now, just do what we always do, keep fighting until we can't fight anymore. Jorge Guzman Dickinson, ND ![]()

Television star and sci-fi writer Richard Hatch will be signing at the Comic Bug on Saturday, September 30th from noon to two o’clock. Hatch starred as Captain Apollo in the original 1979 version of Battlestar Galactica and plays Tom Zarek on the new, re-imagined version of the hit sci-fi series. Richard Hatch has penned seven Battlestar Galactica novels that continue the adventures of the crew of the original series. He produced and directed a five minute trailer based off of those stories entitled Battlestar Galactica: The Second Coming. The Comic Bug will be screening the rare trailer during the signing as well as Hatch’s newest production The Great War of Magellan. The Great War of Magellan is Richard Hatch’s newest creation, an epic, generation spanning sci-fi saga that incorporates Celtic elements and hair-raising space battles. The Great War of Magellan is currently in production as a graphic novel and role playing game. The signing coincides with the release of Dynamite Entertainment’s Battlestar Galactica Classic #1 based on the original series. Comic Bug store manager and lifelong Galactica fan Mike Wellman said, The fact that Dynamite is publishing a comic series based on both the original and the new series proves that two versions of the same story can co-exist. Even though they share a name and concept, they’re really like apples and oranges. Personally, I love them both and I’m honored to host a signing with the only other commonality between the two shows, Richard Hatch! He’s the real deal, ladies and gentlemen! At the end of Season two of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, Gaius Baltar (played by James Callis) was President, and the Cylons had invaded New Caprica to take control of the last remnants of humanity. Is Baltar finally going to get him comeuppance this season? Only James Callis knows what lies ahead for Gaius Baltar. During the break in filming for season three, iF MAGAZINE caught up with Callis and got some interesting NEW info about the upcoming season on the SCI FI Channel (which kicks off with a two-hour season premiere on October 6) and why he now has no fear of public nudity.
Is it possible to make something fantastic even better? Frakk yes! The third season premiere of SCI FI Channel’s BATTLESTAR GALACTICA is even better than Season 2. Picking up some four months after the last season cliffhanger, we find the last remnants of humanity living under Cylon rule. This is basically one big Holocaust analogy with the humans in a gulag being randomly taken and tortured and some never returning to their homes and families. Four months in which the rest of the fleet with both GALACTICA and PEGASUS have been trying desperately to form a plan of rescue for the people stuck on New Caprica. Baltar, still the president is now only doing what the Cylons tell him to do, and he has become the most despised human in existence.

I’m waiting for Ron Moore and David Eick [producers and creators of the new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA] to throw me a Cylon. I said to Ron, “When I grow up I want to be a Cylon” and he said, “We all would love you to be a Cylon.” I’ve been a fan of the concept of humans 2.0. I love the show anyways, having met Ron and David. David actually hired my dad for AMERICAN GOTHIC, which was with Jake Webber from MEDIUM. It’s a very small world.
"I have no problem with Tom or anyone else who wants to do a revival of the original cast and characters or do some kind of continuation. If they can get a good story together and get the pieces lined up to do it, then more power to them."

On Sunday night, I watched in awe as Bear McCreary, composer of the score to Battlestar Galactica, performed music from the show’s second season with his studio band for a modestly sized audience. Several times, I wondered if this fresh talent could be the vanguard of the next wave of important American composers. Comparisons can easily be drawn between Bear and John Williams, Hans Zimmer, and James Horner. He’s getting that good, bringing something new to the field of film composition....

..In case you haven’t seen it, Battlestar Galactica is a show for our post-9/11 times. The producers have taken the premise of the first series — that a race of evil robots is trying to exterminate humankind — and taken it to its logical conclusion. This is a program about what it’s like to exist during a genocide. ...But in spite of the slick touches, I can’t watch Battlestar Galactica. It’s too intense for me. It’s too dark. Literally. The whole thing looks like it takes place on the deck of a U-boat.....

Friday, June 2, 2006 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A radical reimagining of ABC's 1970s show of the same name, the Sci Fi Channel's Battlestar Galactica has wowed critics and fans alike with sophisticated social commentary, nuanced character drama, and rip-roaring action. Even the Peabody Award judges were impressed, citing the series for revitalizing sci-fi television "with its parallax considerations of politics, religion, sex, and even what it means to be 'human.'" The Museum will screen an episode of the series, followed by Q&A with the cast and creative team. In Person: David Eick, Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore, Executive Producer/Head Writer Cast members to be announced. Tickets are on sale to Members May 14. (On sale to general public May 21.) Tickets: $15 ($12 for individual Museum Members). $7 for students with valid ID. In Person: Purchase tickets in the Museum lobby Tuesdays to Sundays from 12:00 to 6:00 p.m. and until 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays. By Phone: Call 212.621.6600 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. Mondays to Fridays.

Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will issue the original, theatrical version of the "Star Wars" trilogy for the first time on DVD Sept. 12. "Star Wars," "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return of the Jedi" will each be released in two-disc versions containing the original theatrical version along with the 2004 digitally remastered version. Helmer George Lucas upgraded digital effects and otherwise altered the original movies to reflect the prequel trilogy for the DVD debut of his first three "Star Wars" pics. In the 2004 version, for example, "Star Wars" (by then considered "Episode IV: A New Hope") starts with a different title crawl than seen in theaters in 1977.
Season three is just around the corner for SCI FI Channel’s BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, and producer David Eick is hard at work picking up after the year long jump forward at the end of season two. Taking time out from his absolutely swamped schedule Eick gave iF Magazine the exclusive scoop about the upcoming CAPRICA prequel series (which the editors here at the office have nicknamed GALACTICA: B.C.), and the return of Lucy Lawless and Dean Stockwell in season three.
THE SKINNY: In an official announcement today SCI FI Channel announced that the network would be producing a BATTLESTAR GALACTICA prequel series entitled CAPRICA. From executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick (BATTLESTAR GALACTICA), writer Remi Aubuchon (24) and NBC Universal Television Studio, this new series is set over a half a century before the events that play out in BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.
When David Eick was asked by Universal Studios to produce a new BATTLESTAR GALACTICA TV series, he knew he wanted to veer away from anything that would be conceived as a STAR TREK rip-off. Who better to helm the writing of the series, and to keep it away from TREK themes than Moore, who had worked on STAR TREK in it’s various incarnations for ten years. Thus began the creative process behind one of television’s most successful and popular Science Fiction dramas on the air.

Runnemede, NJ, April 2006 – Shortly after DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT announced its agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to produce comics based on the classic Battlestar Galactica series, the company has announced creator RICK REMENDER will write the opening arc as well as the ongoing series. Remender, an award-winning, comic book writer, penciller, and inker as well as a feature film animator pitched ideas to DYNAMITE for the series launch. “Rick’s making quite a name for himself as a writer and creator, and we’ve been following his work at Image with a lot of excitement -- Fear Agent is a great read and fans owe it to themselves to check it out -- but I digress,” explained DYNAMITE SPOKESPERSON J. ALLEN. For Battlestar Galactica, “We’re working on the art side right now to match someone up with this awesome script. It’s a fun process, as and Rick’s script is a perfect launch!” "Given the recent rebirth of the franchise it's a real honor to be entrusted with the untold tales of the original Battlestar Galactica,” added Remender. “Like every blue-blooded kid in America in the late 70's, I was a big fan. I've been working hard at translating that childhood enthusiasm into what I hope will be seen as powerful and imaginative stories told with a fresh voice while staying true to the original tone. I'm a big Sci-Fi nerd so this is quite the dream job for me." Remender’s opening arc will be four issues, and he is on board for the ongoing classic series. More details on Classic Battlestar comics to be released in the following weeks. And to close, a final word or two from Remender: “The BSG premise is one of the most fascinating possible Sci-Fi high concepts to play off of. Homeless and left to the void of space after watching the destruction of your entire civilization-- these are real stakes that give birth to the kind of constant high stress/high drama that makes for very entertaining storytelling,” said Remender. “You also have such distinct and iconic characters with so much presence. For one, I’m pretty jazzed to get a swing at Starbuck and Commander Adama’s dialogue.”
On Monday, April 10, charityfolks.com will be hosting the online auction to benefit Waterkeeper Alliance - Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s environmental organization. Kennedy, Jr.'s, the paddle will be a truly unique collector's item. The auction begins April 10 and runs to the 29th. In order to bid, one has to sign on to www.charityfolks.com to register.

He's the hardest working Cylon Centurion in show-business..Here is a stand-up comedy act you WON'T want to miss. Thought Cylons didn't have a sense of humor? ...Well, lets just say we can't blame him for trying..
"Friday nights in my house at ten o’clock he watches it," says McDonnell. "He doesn’t like to TiVo it, he likes to watch it with the world. I don’t need to watch it. I’ve seen it already by that point, I’ve seen the dailies, I’ve seen the final cut, and I’m not going to sit down and watch it. I can’t disturb him, and God Forbid I should forget and schedule us a dinner."
"This time around, the Cylons were built to be servant machines to mankind. They rebel and flee to another planet to establish their own culture. When the original mini-series aired, there existed between the Cylons and humans an uneasy truce. During the forty or so odd years since the original Cylon War, they have evolved into human-looking robots. (Think TERMINATOR with emotions and a sex drive) The Cylons strike out at the human colonies with nuclear weapons and force the remnants of humanity to form a rag-tag fleet protected by the Battlestar Galactica, with one purpose- to find Earth."
" When we set out to ‘re-envision’ BATTLESTAR GALACTICA we were told, you don’t pull on Superman’s cape, you don’t spit into the wind, you don’t unmask that old Lone Ranger, and you don’t cut off Starbuck’s Little Jim."

Hatch is about to enter his 11th year on the convention circuit, after spending the previous 15 years of his life thinking that his Galactica days were behind him. Any artist up for consideration has big shoes to fill; our last artist was very talented and pushed things to the limit. We are looking for talented, visionary artists to help us break through barriers we haven't even reached yet in this exciting new universe. You can be an awesome illustrator and a horrible storyteller, conversely you can have strong storytelling abilities and be a shoddy illustrator at best. And we need artists who are strong in the concept department. We're looking for awesome on all counts, and we're looking for it times three! That's right, we are searching for multiple artists to handle a big production schedule next year. What we are looking for: Versatile artists with strong storytelling skills; a powerful visual style filled with depth, dynamics and verve, and an understanding of the commitment it takes to put out a comic book in today's market. This is a science fiction/fantasy universe, and we have a lot of tech, futuristic architecture and ships that needs drawing, so you must be able and comfortable with that. Plus, you need to be able to create realistic characters and creatures, and draw likenesses such as Richard Hatch. While we are open to artists from anywhere, we would prefer you be local to the NY/NJ/CT/PA area. This is a paid gig! What we need from you now: Please send along samples of your work. Most important are sequential pages. Pin ups are nice, but tell us nothing of your storytelling ability, the sequential pages will give us a clue as to how you work, and whether we think we can work with you. Please send LINKS ONLY that show 3-5 pages of sequential work. Do not send attachments. There are plenty of artists' forums out there, and many are free of charge, so there are places online to showcase your work. If you must send us attachments, email us for permission and instructions. Where to send: All submissions should be emailed to submissions@blamventures.com AND merlinquest@hotmail.com with the phrase GWOM Artist Search 2006 in the subject line.

Richard Hatch appearance at Supanova Sydney 2005 is now available as a podcast over at: http:// www.supanova.com.au/podcast
From the birth of broadcast TV, until just before the turn of the twenty-first century, most weekly television series adhered to a predictable format. Each episode in a series was conceived as a stand alone adventure. Storylines would be introduced, developed, and then resolved within the given time slot of a program. Events which occurred in one episode would have little or no appreciable effect on future episodes in the series.
"I have a movie coming out with Jake Busey, Gary Busey's son," said Hatch. "And I'm also producing my own science fiction series - a novelisation and comic book series called The Great War of Magellan, which I'm writing, directing and producing. I also have a Battlestar Galactica novel coming out called Redemption, the seventh book in the series."
